BA’s Hiring Plans Rages Union

Accusations have been placed on the British Airways by the Unite union of inflaming their industrial argument by making a move to hire 1,250 new members for cabin crew on worse terms and conditions.

The union, which has already organized 22 days of strikes this year, which has cost the airline almost £150m, said BA was trying to impose more modifications on its personnel in an act of provocation.

It made claims that the new crew would be earning minimum wage salaries of a maximum £13,750 on a yearly basis, which is inclusive of allowances, as contrasted with a standard today of £25,773 for Heathrow-based crew and £18,323 for those based at Gatwick. BA disputed that, stating that pay would be comparable to existing Gatwick rates.

Tony Woodley, Unite's Joint-General Secretary, said this will do nothing to influence cabin crew that BA administration is looking to settle the disagreement and nothing to discourage the members from voting for additional industrial action.

Unite is balloting BA's 12,000 cabin crew for fresh walkouts during the peak August holiday month. The ballot starts on June 29 and runs till July 27. Strikes could commence on August 3.

The union said that it understood that BA, like firms in other industries, was searching for ways to introduce a lower-cost labor force.
